World’s Most Expensive Places to Have Safe Sex

For obvious reasons you can’t recycle a condom, but have you ever wondered which countries “tax” sex the most?
Well… Environmental Graffiti has decided to create a detailed graphical diagram, complete with wallpaper download for your viewing pleasure. The data, which gives the average condom price around the world has been compiled from UK price comparison site pricerunner and a blogger from an interesting little site called condomunity. We thought we’d go one step further however, and create a graphic representation of the findings - I think you’ll agree the graph makes for ‘interesting’ viewing.
When looking at it, please don’t deduce that bar heights are correlated to penis size (that’s just offensive).
Shanghai came out the cheapest with an average price of just $4.50 (£2.25), whilst Ireland was the country where sex costs the most (!) at almost $18 (£9) on average for a pack – (perhaps due to the hostility of the Catholic Church towards contraception?). Prices within the US showed a high amount of variation, from $9.50 (£4.75) in Houston to nearly $15 (£7.50) in New York - feel free to extrapolate from that what you wish…
Condoms can’t be recycled and as such may be considered damaging to the environment. And the solution offered for most things that either cannot be recycled or damage the environment? Tax. Petrol, plastic bags (soon), driving in central London, all cost at a premium. But putting a price on sex? Well that’s just cheap…

Here’s an interesting price comparison for a Durex Elite 12 pack kindly served to us by pricerunner. The prices vary from an average 3.15 (GBP) in Shanghai to 12.47 (GBP) in Ireland.
Another interesting aspect of this list is the price for a Durex Elite 12 pack in Houston or Denver compared to the rather high prices in Los Angeles or New York. Obviously there’s a simple solution really: you can buy condoms online. Have a look at the entire list here:

While I think quality has its price I don’t really agree with some of these high prices that we find in the UK and Netherlands. [ note of the editor : well, they did not vist the Condomerie, we sell in the shop and online for example 12 durex condoms for euro 2,90 =  £ 2.37 ! is as cheap as in Shanghai or even more cheap if you buy bigger quantities.! ]

Condoms getting cheaper
Although the UK is still one of the most expensive places to buy condoms, prices have been steadily falling. In 2003, 12 Durex condoms would have set you back £9.31, whereas now they cost just £7.57. Shanghai has the best global price on condoms with 12 costing only £2.27. Shanghai is also cheapest for cigarettes with 20 Marlboro Lights costing a measly £0.92.  Condoms: Durex Elite. 12 pack    £2.27    Shanghai    £8.99    Ireland
The global PriceRunner study shows that the price of cigarettes has steadily risen in the UK, with a packet of 20 Marlboro Lights costing £4.95 in 2003 compared with £5.33 today.
Mattias Berg, UK Managing Director, PriceRunner commented “Not only is London the most expensive place in the World to watch a film, but Brits have to pay more than anyone other country on a number of key consumer goods. It’s good to see that condoms and other items are coming down in price, but Brits still get a raw deal on entertainment items such as cinema tickets.”
