Coffee condoms promote safe sex in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Doctors have long argued over the health effects of coffee, but its reputation looks set to receive a boost thanks to a new flavoured condom that aims to encourage safer sex in Ethiopia.

Around 300,000 of the coffee condoms were sold in one week when they were launched in September, according to NGO DKT International. It hopes to tap into Ethiopia's coffee mania as a means to tackle high rates of HIV in the country, which is said to have invented the drink.  The NGO is hoping to fight the spread of AIDS with a unique product that appeals to coffee mania in the country that claims to have invented the drink: java-scented condoms for Ethiopia This Washington D.C.-based charity DKT International says the novelty product addresses a serious issue.
Ethiopia has an AIDS rate of 2.1 percent, and in the capital Addis Ababa it is more than 7 percent, according to government estimates.

Andrew Piller, director of DKT's local chapter, said the aim of the coffee condoms was not to make money, but to make condom-users more comfortable.

DKT has noted some users' complaints about the latex scent of plain condoms, and has also tried to market condoms in other parts of the world tailored to local tastes, including those scented with the infamously stinky durian fruit in Indonesia and sweet-corn fragranced condoms in China.

"Everybody likes the flavor of coffee," says a DKT spokeswoman, Emebet Abu in Ethiopia.

The Coffee Condoms sell in packs of three for 1 birr, or about 9 euro cents -- about half the price of a cup of coffee in one of Addis Ababa's many sidewalk cafes, and much cheaper than unsubsidized condoms. The dark brown condoms smell like Ethiopia's popular macchiato, an espresso with a generous amount of cream and sugar.

"It is about time to use an Ethiopian flavor for beautiful Ethiopian girls," said Dereje Alemu, a 19-year-old university student.

But in a deeply conservative country, the prophylactic has attracted some criticism.

"It's inappropriate," said Bedilu Assefa, a spokesman for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, whose tens of millions of followers are encouraged to abstain from sex outside marriage. "We're proud of our coffee."

Even critics of the coffee condom, though, recognize the importance of safe sex. "I hate coffee-flavored condoms," said a 37-year-old mechanic Tadesse Teferi. "But I use ordinary condoms when I have sex with ladies other than my wife."

Dokters discussiëren al lang over de gezondheidseffecten van koffie, maar de reputatie van deze zwarte drank lijkt nu wel een boost te krijgen dankzij een condoom met koffiearoma dat veiligere seks moet aanmoedigen in Ethiopië.
Er werden volgens de Amerikaanse hulporganisatie DKT International rond de 300.000 koffiecondooms verkocht in de week waarin ze werden gelanceerd in september. De organisatie wil inspelen op de koffierage in de bakermat van de koffie om de hoge HIV-besmettingsgraad in het land een halt toe te roepen. 2,1% van de Ethiopiërs en 7% van de inwoners van de hoofdstad Addis Abeba zijn besmet met Aids. Daarom is dit voorbehoedsmiddel met een smaakje meer dan een nieuwtje. “Iedereen houdt van het aroma van koffie,” zei de woordvoerster. De condooms worden verkocht in pakjes van drie voor 1 birr wat ongeveer de helft van de prijs is voor een kopje koffie in een café in Addis Abeba, en wat veel goedkoper is dan de meeste andere condoommerken.
De donkerbruine condooms zouden moeten ruiken als de in Ethiopië populaire macchiato, een espresso met een ruime portie room en suiker. “Het is tijd om een Ethiopische smaak te gebruiken voor mooie Ethiopische meisjes,” zei Dereje Alemu, een negentienjarige universiteitsstudent. Het product werd ontwikkeld na klachten over de latexgeur van gewone condooms.
DKT heeft ook in andere delen van de wereld gearomatiseerde condooms geïntroduceerd in een poging tegemoet te komen aan de lokale smaak. Onder andere condooms met het aroma van de beruchte stinkvrucht in Indonesia, of van zoete maïs in China.
Maar het laatste product van de organisatie heeft wel wat kritiek gegenereerd in het diep conservatieve Ethiopië. “Het is ongehoord,” zei Bedilu Assefa, een woordvoerder van de Ethiopische Orthodoxe kerk. De kerk moedigt haar miljoenen volgelingen aan zich te onthouden van buitenhuwelijkse seks. “We zijn trots op onze koffie”.
Maar zelfs degene die niet te vinden zijn voor het idee van koffiecondooms, erkennen het belang van veilige seks. “Ik haat condooms met koffiearoma,” zegt Tadesse Teferi, een 37-jarige mecanicien. “Maar ik gebruik gewone condooms wanneer ik seks heb met dames die niet mijn vrouw zijn”.
